Determination of Entrance Skin Dose from Diagnostic Human Chest X-ray in General Hospital Minna

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the trend of dose received by patient during x-ray examination in General Hospital, Minna in Niger State, Nigeria. Entrance skin doses (ESDs) for chest PA (posterior anterior) examination were measured. A total of 67 data were collected from patients who were exposed to diagnostic X-ray during chest X-ray examinations. The age of the patients ranged between 10 to 70 years old while the weight and height of these patients ranged between 45.6kg to 75.6kg and 145.6cm to 163.3cm, respectively. The patent’s skin dose was determined using Edmond’s formula, which is based on the X-ray tube and the radiographic exposure parameters of kVp, mAS, SSD and the total filtration of the beams. The calculated mean skin dose ranges from 0.9mGy to 1.3mGy. The results obtained were high compared to other established work which indicated that there is need to optimize service in the General Hospital.
