Isolation and Identification of Bacteria from effluent of Abattoir in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria

Abstract

Isolation and identification of bacteria from effluent of abattoir was investigated. Bacteria count was done using pour plate technique. Isolation and identification of bacteria was carried out by plating on Blood and Mac Conkey agar after subjecting the pure isolates to series of biochemical tests. The result of the bacteria count from the four samplings are as follows; Sample A: 1.40x106 cfu/mg to 1.32x108 cfu/mg. Sample B: 1.50x106 cfu/mg to 1.38 x108 cfu/mg. Sample C: 1.32 x 106 cfu/mg to 1.08 x108 cfu/mg. Sample D: 1.58 x 106 cfu/mg to 1.16 x 108 cfu/mg. Bacteria isolates and their corresponding percentages includes; Eschericha coli 14(12%), Bacillus sp 15(13%), Pseudomonassp 3(2%), Staphylococcusaureus 12(10%), Salmonellasp15(13%), Vibro sp 15(13%), Klebsiella sp 3(2%), Entrococais sp 12(10%), Acinetobacter mallei 5(4%), Elavobacterium sp 3(2%), Alcaligens feacalis 3(2%), Listera monocytogen 11(9%), Clostridium sp 4(3%), Versinia sp 3(2%), and Proteus sp 1(1%). The outcome of this research suggests that the water used to wash the slaughtering tables and floors in abattoir is most likely contaminated by these organisms in the effluent. Consequently, the release of untreated abattoir effluent into water bodies could lead to the outbreak of water borne diseases, and may have detrimental effect on aquatic life, which could cause bacterial food poisoning.
