Strength Characteristics of Pulverized Waste Tire and Lime Stabilized Laterite Soil from Deteriorated Owode Section of Lagos-Abeokuta Highway, Southwestern Nigeria

This study presents an investigation of the strength characteristics of Pulverized Waste Tire (PWT) andlime-stabilised Laterite soil (LS) from Owode section of Lagos-Abeokuta Highway, SouthwesternNigeria. Samples of LS were stabilized with between 0-10 % by weight of PWT and lime respectively.This was done to determine and compare the influence of PWT and lime as stabilizing agents on someengineering properties of the soil. Six cases of PWT/lime stabilized LS were respectively considered, withdifferent percentage replacement of stabilizers and the LS. Though the laboratory tests present thesubgrade soil sample as incompetent for road construction, with all the samples falling within the A-7-6category in the AASHTO classification, strong negative correlations of -0.9292 and -0.9121 wererespectively established between the percentage lime and PWT and the linear shrinkage. Surprisingly,negative correlations of -0.5778 and -0.5729 were found between the MDD and the percentage lime andPWT stabilizers, and positive correlation of 0.8794 and 0.9732 was established between the OMC andpercentage Lime and PWT stabilizers. The influence of Lime and PWT on the compaction characteristicsthus reduces. The influence of lime and PWT on the UCS of the soil was found to be strong with apositive coefficient correlation of 0.9663 and 0.9376 respectively. The CBR on both lime and PWTstabilized soil gave a coefficient correlation of 0.9512 (soaked)/0.9594 (unsoaked) and -0.1167(soaked)/0.7216 (unsoaked) respectively. Proper drainage must therefore be ensured if the stabilizing agents in thisstudy are to be utilized in highway construction.
